چکیده

Speckle is an intrinsic feature of images acquired with any imaging system employing coherent wavefields. It manifests itself as a rapid fluctuation of the detected intensity (or field envelope) over the spatial extent of the image, conveying a granular texture. In optical coherence tomography (OCT), it is generated by the ‘coherent’ summation (i.e. on a complex amplitude basis) of multiple optical wavefields. These wavefields are backscattered from the sample arm of the OCT interferometer and are made to interfere with a reference wavefield at the detector. Interference is observed if their relative time delay is within the coherence time of the source.

Speckle Noise Reduction for the Enhancement of Retinal Layers in Optical Coherence Tomography Images

Introduction One of the most important pre-processing steps in optical coherence tomography (OCT) is reducing speckle noise, resulting from multiple scattering of tissues, which degrades the quality of OCT images. Materials and Methods The present study focused on speckle noise reduction and edge detection techniques. Statistical filters with different masks and noise variances were applied on ...

The Application of Multi-Layer Artificial Neural Networks in Speckle Reduction (Methodology)

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) uses the spatial and temporal coherence properties of optical waves backscattered from a tissue sample to form an image. An inherent characteristic of coherent imaging is the presence of speckle noise. In this study we use a new ensemble framework which is a combination of several Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) neural networks to denoise OCT images. The noise is...

Optical coherence tomography speckle reduction by a partially spatially coherent source.

Speckle in optical coherence tomography (OCT) images originates in the high spatial coherence of incident light that enables interference of light backscattered from spatially heterogenous tissue specimens. We report results of a numerical simulation and an experiment to test speckle reduction using a partially spatially coherent source. A Gaussian-Schell model for a partially spatially coheren...

Flow measurement without phase information in optical coherence tomography images.

Doppler optical coherence tomography (DOCT) is a valuable tool for depth-resolved flow measurements in tissue. However, DOCT is insensitive to flow in the direction normal to the imaging beam and requires knowledge of the phase of the demodulated signal. We present an alternative method of extracting flow information, using speckle of conventional amplitude optical coherence tomography images. ...
